Hatzolah constantly strives to be the fastest response emergency service in the city. Any time of the day or night, our committed volunteers are ready to respond to any medical crisis. From the moment of that crucial call, to our seamless dispatch process, to the swift arrival of our expertly trained and dedicated staff – more lives are saved every day.

Despite the calibre of Hatzolah’s superb service and training that place it in a league of its own, the initiative is supported by, and relies solely on, the donations of the community. No patient, or family member of a patient, who calls on Hatzolah is charged for the service.

If you’d like to find out about Hatzolah’s history, its volunteers, services, and how you can contribute toward the survival of this imperative, life-saving organisation, you’ve come to the right place. Please read on and find out more!

Hatzolah’s quest is this: To respond to the medical emergency needs of the Jewish community and to complement the services of existing ambulance services with rapid, high quality emergency care.

Hatzolah Medical Rescue, Johannesburg, was started in 1998 to assist the existing medical emergency services in the area, which are under enormous strain. The organisation is staffed by a group of Torah observant Jewish volunteers and is provided as a free service to all Jewish people within our operating areas.

Hatzolah is now also a registered Section 21 Company as well as a public benefit organisation, which is run and managed by a board of directors consisting purely of volunteers.

Hatzolah operates within a tightly knit geographic area, allowing us to provide emergency medical assistance very quickly and efficiently.

We believe that our role in the realm of medical rescue in South Africa is to get a trained medical responder to the scene immediately, to be followed by either one of our ambulances, or a private or government ambulance.

With a group of over 35 trained medical responders who live and work in these areas, we are able to respond to emergency calls within minutes. This is a level of service which the existing emergency medical system is unfortunately not always able to provide, with far greater areas to cover and thus much longer response times.

In addition to full time staff who man our ambulances, we also provide volunteer responders who will arrive on the scene and manage the patient, if necessary, while our ambulance is en route.

The Hatzolah model is currently operational in many countries around the world, including America, England, Australia, Israel and certain Europian countries.

Areas covered by Hatzolah

The primary role of Hatzolah is to cover areas where there are Jewish communities. We respond to emergencies within the Greater Glenhazel area and selected surrounding areas, from the western border of Edenvale across to Rosebank, and from the Northern border of the Johannesburg CBD to the Marlboro area. We also cover Sandton and Gallo Manor, as well as Greenside, Emmerentia and Victory park, however we will only respond in these areas in the case of life threatening emergencies.
